Ruth Handler – creator of Barbie

Summary

Barbie was one of the hit films of 2023 and is competing for several Oscars this spring – but Barbie’s creator Ruth Handler is not as well known as her famous doll. Soundings contributor Liz tells the story of how Ruth Handler, born in America to immigrant parents, built a business empire with her husband Elliot, creating the Mattel Company and the Barbie doll. Ruth also had a second lesser known but trailblazing career as owner of ‘Nearly Me’ which supported women after breast surgery.
